Blood: Functions of Extreme Importance to the Body
See below the main components of blood and their functions:
HEMACIES
Functions:
- Perform cellular respiration.
- Carry oxygen to the various tissues of the body.
- Transport part of the carbon dioxide through hemoglobin (one of the main components of red blood cells).
Leukocytes
Functions:
- They are responsible for protecting the body (immune function). They fight disease-causing microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, parasites) and any foreign substances that enter the human body (eg proteins that are not foreign to the body).
- They cleanse the body by destroying dead cells or tissue debris.
Platelets
Functions:
- They are responsible for blood clotting. That is, they are fundamental in the process of hemostasis (the body's mechanism to contain a hemorrhage).
BLOOD PLASMA
Functions:
- They carry red blood cells, platelets, leukocytes, antibodies, vitamins, hormones, gases, proteins and salts.
- They have regulatory function because they allow cells to eliminate substances generated in the metabolic process. In this sense, they also enable the receipt of the fundamental nutrients for cell function.
- They act as body water reserves.
