What it is and how it occurs

There are important factors that directly influence bone growth, such as: genetic factor, nutritional factors, physical factor and hormonal factors.

In the genetic factor, it is the genetic code - DNA - that determines what will be the maximum height of each individual.

Regarding nutritional factors, it is known that for proper bone growth, proteins, calcium and vitamins such as C and D cannot be lacking.

When protein is lacking, growth does not reach its potential and the result is short stature.

Lack of calcium leads to deformation of lower limb bones, a problem known as rickets.

Because it is responsible for stimulating protein production, in addition to being an excellent antioxidant, vitamin C, when lacking in the body, prevents cells from receiving the stimulation necessary for protein production.

Because vitamin D deficiency is essential for calcium absorption, it prevents calcium from being absorbed by the intestine, because without vitamin D the intestine does not absorb calcium.

There is yet another factor, the physical factor. In this, two things determine bone growth: traction force and pressure force.

The last factor is the hormonal, in this is the growth hormone (GH) that stimulates the epiphyseal and periosteum disc. It is produced until 21 years of age, after this age its production is decreased dramatically.
